About Piroska Nagy-Mohacsi

Piroska Nagy-Mohacsi is a native-born Hungarian who also holds British citizenship, and she is fluent in English, Hungarian, French, and Russian, as well as proficient in Spanish. Across her career, Piroska has demonstrated skill in areas that include emerging markets, public policy, international development, policy analysis, and international relations.

As a person and a professional alike, Piroska Nagy-Mohacsi has always been motivated and driven by innovation. It’s this focus on the cutting edge that fuels Piroska’s interest in technology, finance, cryptocurrencies, central bank digital currencies, and financial crisis management. She has even written books on related topics, including “The Meltdown of the Russian State,” written in 2000. Piroska has also been published in several publications, including in August 2020 when she was printed in Project Syndicate with her article “The Quiet Revolution of Emerging-Market Monetary Policy.

​​Piroska Nagy-Mohacsi began her career at Corvinus University of Budapest in Hungary, where she earned her Master of Science degree in Macroeconomics and Finance in 1981. Seven years after graduating, following her work with the National Bank of Hungary and after stepping into a role with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 1986, Piroska returned to academia. She enrolled at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she completed her post-graduate studies in public finance in 1990. 

After graduating, she continued her work with the International Monetary Fund. In 1996, Piroska Nagy-Mohacsi stepped into a role as a Guest Lecturer with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. Later, in 2003, she stepped into a temporary position with Fitch Ratings in London as Senior Advisor. She stayed in that role for a year before taking on a new role with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London, where she served as the Senior Advisor. 

In 2008, Piroska Nagy-Mohacsi left her position as Division Chief and Advisor with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to join the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development full time, this time as the Director for Country Strategy and Policy at the Office of the Chief Economist. She excelled in this position until 2015, when she left to join the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 2021, Piroska stepped into her current role with the School as a Visiting Professor at the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa. Piroska has also been included as a panelist of speaker for a variety of events, including the “Planning for the Post-COVID world: central bank policies in emerging economies” event, which took place in October 2021. Most recently, she was one of the leaders to sign a letter to the G20 leaders regarding the inequitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine.
